Sigma reveals APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM full-frame 1:1 macro lens

February 13th, 2012 No comments

Sigma has announced the APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM, an image stabilized telephoto macro lens. The company claim it is the first 180mm macro to combine 1:1 reproduction with an F2.8 maximum aperture. It offers a closest focusing distance of 47cm (18.5 inches) and includes the company’s optical stabilization and ‘FLD’ fluorite-like glass elements. An internal focus design and ring-type HSM focus motor allow full-time manual focus override. Pricing and availability will be announced later.

Sigma Corporation, a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world’s most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, is pleased to announce the Sigma APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM, the world’s first 180mm macro lens that offers a magnification ratio of 1:1 and a large maximum aperture of F2.8.

As the successor to Sigma’s earlier 180mm F3.5 EX DG macro lens, the new APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM lens now boasts the company’s proprietary Optical Stabilizer (OS) technology and a wide F2.8 aperture to allow faster shutter speeds for narrow depth of field. With the OS feature, this lens offers the use of shutter speeds approximately four stops slower than would otherwise be possible, enabling handheld close-up photography. Three “F” Low Dispersion (FLD) glass elements, which have a performance equal to fluorite glass, are included to provide correction for color aberrations, and an inner focusing system minimizes aberrations that occur as shooting distances change.

“Our first 180mm macro was very popular with macro photographers and we’re certain that discerning photographers will be very impressed with its new technical and performance upgrades. The Optical Stabilizer technology and faster maximum aperture will make it even easier for users to capture the close-up, intricate details in the tiny world around them,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “We’ve released some really incredible products in the past year – there’s truly something in our lineup for every type and level of photographer.”

Equipped with the Super Multi-Layer Coating feature, the APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM lens reduces flare and ghosting and delivers sharp and high contrast images, even at the maximum aperture. The incorporation of Sigma’s Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures quiet and high-speed autofocus, as well as full-time manual focus capability. The macro lens has a rounded nine-blade diaphragm to create an attractive blur to the image’s out-of-focus areas. At 1:1 magnification, this lens has a focusing distance of 18.5 inches, which is a greater working distance than shorter focal length macro lenses, making it advantageous when taking pictures of highly sensitive subjects like butterflies.

The announcement was made at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2012 in Las Vegas, NV, where Sigma Corporation is exhibiting this week in the Las Vegas Convention Center’s Central Hall at booth 8960. The company also announced the launch of a new product line and two new lenses that are specifically designed for use with Micro Four Thirds and E-mount mirrorless interchangeable lens camera systems. The pricing and availability of all of these new lenses are pending.

Sigma reveals 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM with ‘FLD’ glass

December 19th, 2011 No comments

Sigma has released version II of its 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM superzoom lens. The latest version adds Sigma’s FLD glass, the ‘fluorite-like’ glass co-developed with Hoya and features a revised design (it now features a narrower body and 18 elements in 14 groups, rather than the 13 groups of its predecessor). The lens will be available for Canon, Nikon, Sigma, Pentax and Sony systems (without optical stabilization on the last two mounts). MSRP will be $720.

The Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the SIGMA 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM. This 11.1x high zoom ratio lens is designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras, incorporates Sigma’s original OS (Optical Stabilizer) function and offers a broad shooting range from wide angle to telephoto.

The SIGMA 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM is the successor to the SIGMA 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS/ HSM which was launched in June 2007. The lens is ideal for travel photography with a compact construction and length of just 87.7mm. This lens features FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements, which have the performance equal to fluorite glass, and SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements providing excellent correction of color aberration. Aspherical lenses give excellent correction for all types of aberration and distortion. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting, ensuring high quality images throughout the entire zoom range. Sigma’s OS (Optical Stabilizer) system offers effective correction of approximately 4 stops, enabling easy handheld photography. HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures quiet, high-speed auto focus and the inner focus system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the supplied petal-type lens hood and circular polarizing filters. The rounded 7 blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of images.

* Sony and Pentax mounts do not incorporate Optical Stabilization

Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG Macro now available

September 3rd, 2011 No comments

Sigma has announced pricing and availability for its 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro lens. The optically stabilized version of the lens, originally announced back in February, is available now with a recommended selling price of $1,400. The 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM offers true 1:1 macro reproduction, and uses a floating focus system to maintain high optical performance at all distances.

Sigma Corporation of America, a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world’s most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, is pleased to announce that its newly upgraded 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro lens is now available for the MSRP of $1,400.

The updated 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro lens now features Sigma’s own proprietary Optical Stabilizer (OS) technology, which allows for high-performance, handheld, close-up photography. The telephoto reach makes it a perfect lens for capturing images of insects and small creatures. Additionally, the wide maximum aperture combined with a short telephoto focal length make it very favorable for facial portraiture at lower magnification. A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and one high refractive index SLD lens provide excellent corrections for all types of aberration and distortion.

“This lens is a fantastic addition to our extensive lineup of macro lenses,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “This is our fourth prime macro lens and the second of which that now includes our Optical Stabilization technology, which steadies the image for handheld use. This is yet another example of Sigma’s dedication to providing an array of unique lens that capture incredible imagery.”

Sigma’s Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) feature ensures quiet and high-speed autofocus as well as full-time manual focus capability. This lens also has a rounded nine-blade diaphragm that creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image.

The 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro features a floating focusing system that moves two different lens groups in the optical path to different positions. This system compensates for astigmatic aberration and spherical aberration, and provides extremely high optical performance from infinity to 1:1 macro. The super multi-layer coating reduces flare and ghosting, providing high contrast images. It is also possible to use this lens with Sigma’s APO teleconverters.

Sigma announces 120-300mm OS price and availability

July 7th, 2011 No comments

Sigma has announced the pricing and availability of the stabilized versions of its 120-300mm F2.8 telezoom lens. The 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG OS APO HSM will have an MSRP of $4,700. The lens, which features Sigma’s latest FLD low-dispersion glass is available now in Canon, Nikon and Sigma mounts.

Sigma Corporation’s New, Optically Stabilized 120-300mm F2.8 Now Shipping in US

RONKONKOMA, N.Y., June 1, 2011Sigma Corporation of America, a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world’s most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, has announced that its updated 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG OS APO HSM is now available for purchase in the U.S. for the MSRP of $4,700.

The upgraded version of the Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG OS APO HSM will replace its predecessor as the essential Sigma lens for sports and wildlife photographers. The fast, fixed-aperture telephoto zoom will now feature some of the company’s new “F” Low Dispersion (FLD) glass elements and a splash-proof design which protects from “water spattering” as buttons and connections benefit from O-ring sealing connections to prevent dust and water getting inside the camera body. It also boasts Sigma’s proprietary Optical Stabilizer (OS) system, which will enable handheld photography and the use of shutter speeds approximately four stops slower than would otherwise be possible.

“This lens is a must-have for sports and wildlife photographers,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “Think of this as a prime 300mm F2.8 in terms of its ultra-high resolution, with the added bonus of it being an F2.8 constant-aperture zoom lens that allows the photographer to recompose the scene anywhere from 120mm to 300mm without having to change their capture position. There’s really no other lens like it.”

The versatile lens is designed for use with full frame digital SLR cameras but may also be used with smaller APS-C size sensors with a corresponding effective increase in focal length to approximately 180-450mm with most cameras. The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures quiet and high speed auto focus, while allowing full-time manual focus override. The maximum aperture remains constant at F2.8 throughout the entire zoom range. The addition of the optional Sigma 1.4x APO teleconverter effectively makes this lens a 168mm to 420mm F4.0 lens. Adding the Sigma 2x APO teleconverter makes this lens a 240-600mm F5.6 lens (full autofocus operation is possible using the Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG OS APO HSM and either the 1.4x APO or the 2x APO teleconverter in Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts).

One SLD and two FLD glass elements, which are comparable in optical performance to fluorite glass, provide maximum correction of chromatic aberrations. The super multi-layer coating reduces flare and ghosting, and the lens design incorporates an inner focusing and inner zooming system to ensure sharp images throughout the entire zoom range. Improved optical performance provides excellent correction of sagittal coma flare and ensures ultra-high resolution, comparable to a fixed focal length lens.

Sigma announces SD1 pricing and availability

June 21st, 2011 No comments

Sigma has announced details of the pricing of its SD1 APS-C 15x3MP DSLR, saying it is aiming at users currently shooting medium format. The camera, based on the technology of Sigma’s sensor development company Foveon, captures information about three colors for each of its 15 million pixels, rather than just one color per pixel in conventional, ‘Bayer’ designs. This gives 46 million pieces of color information. It is the company’s first move away from the 4.7x3MP sensors used in its existing DSLRs and DP-series fixed lens large sensor compacts. The SD1 features the ability to shoot at 5 frames per second, offers a 3.0″ 460,000 dot LCD screen and an 11-point AF system. It is based around the company’s own SA lens mount. Cameras will available from the end of June at a price of $9,700 in the US and £6,199.99 (inc VAT) in the UK.

NY, May 20, 2011Sigma Corporation of America, a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world’s most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, is pleased to announce that its flagship DSLR, the Sigma SD1, will be available for purchase for the MSRP of $9,700 in early June.

This 46-megapixel DSLR is delivered in a splash-proof, easy-to-handle build that is similar to that of a classic 35mm camera. Professional and high-end enthusiast photographers will utilize the SD1’s exclusive Foveon 23.5×15.7mm APS-C X3 direct image sensor to capture exceptionally rich and detailed images that have a film-like quality. Users will also benefit from Sigma’s wide selection of interchangeable lenses that are compatible with the SD1.

“The SD1 will carve out a new category in the marketplace by providing high-end photographers with an alternative to very expensive medium-format cameras and digital backs, while offering unrivaled image quality,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “By embracing the SD1, serious photographers will also be able to take advantage of Sigma’s extensive lineup of affordable lenses, which are compatible with this new camera. The selections of lenses for medium-format cameras on the market are somewhat limited, so this will be a huge advantage for SD1 users. This is undoubtedly a very special camera, and we’re thrilled to share it with the photo community.”

In addition to the 23.5×15.7mm APS-C X3 direct image sensor, the Sigma SD1 features dual “Three-layer Responsive Ultimate Engine (TRUE) II” image processing engines, which improves processing speed, provides high resolution power and produces high-definition images with richly graduated tones.  It also allows simultaneous RAW and JPEG recording, which is a first for Sigma cameras. Additionally, the photographer has the option to select full-size, half-size or quarter-size RAW files making it a more versatile camera for a wide range of photographers. The Foveon sensor uses three silicon-embedded layers of photo detectors, stacked vertically to take advantage of silicon’s ability to absorb red, green and blue light at different respective depths. This technology efficiently reproduces color more accurately and offers sharper resolution, pixel for pixel, than any conventional image sensor. Since color moiré is not generated, the use of a low-pass filter is not required.

The optical format of the Foveon sensor has been upgraded from that which was used in previous SD cameras, and has increased from 1.7x focal length to the 1.5x focal length multiplier. The SD1 also benefits from improved image processing and noise reduction algorithms, with an ISO sensitivity range from 100 to 6400. This is two full stops more sensitivity than the SD15, which has a maximum 1600 ISO.  An intuitive user interface and an impressive lightweight, yet solid magnesium alloy body and O-ring sealing connections that make the camera durable and splash proof are also key feature upgrades of the flagship SD1.

The SD1 adopts the TYPE 1 Compact Flash Card, and is UDMA-compatible enabling fast processing of large amounts of data. The autofocus system features an 11-point shifted twin cross type sensor, which improves AF accuracy. The SD1 features a 3.0 inch TFT color monitor. This 460,000 pixel resolution LCD monitor benefits from a wide viewing angle, making it easy to check focusing and composition. The SD1 can be used with more than 40 Sigma SA mount lenses such as ultra-wide, ultra-telephoto, macro and fisheye.

Sigma’s image processing software, Photo Pro 5.0, comes bundled with the camera and its simple operation allows quick and easy capture of the desired imaged.  Additional functions such as Loupe, Slideshow, Print, Convert to JPEG file and Batch White Balance settings are also incorporated into this software.

The Sigma SD1 will be available for the MSRP of $9,700 through select authorized Sigma dealers. For information about Sigma Corporation of America, visit www.sigmaphoto.com. For more information about the Sigma SD1 DSLR, visit http://www.sigmaphoto.com/shop/sd1-dslr-sigma or view the camera’s special page at www.sigma-sd.com/SD1.

Product Summary

Sigma stabilizes 50-150mm F2.8 EX DC APO OS HSM

April 4th, 2011 No comments

In a group of releases, Sigma has unveiled an optically stabilized version of its 50-150mm F2.8 fast telephoto zoom for APS-C DSLRS. The 50-150mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM gives a field-of-view range equivalent to around 75-225mm on a 35mm system, but in a design that is smaller and lighter than full frame 70-200mm F2.8 designs. The latest, ‘OS’ version is claimed to offer the ability to get stable shots at shutter speeds four stops slower than without it. It features a completely revised optical design with 21 elements in 15 groups.

large aperture telephoto zoom lens with Optical Stabilisation

  • Compact, lightweight, large aperture telephoto zoom lens
  • Sigma’s proprietary Optical Stabilisation system
  • Rounded 9 blade aperture
  • HSM for fast and quiet autofocus
  • Compatible with Sigma EX DG APO Tele-Converters

The Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the new Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 EX DC APO OS HSM, designed especially for digital SLRs with an APS-C size image sensor.

Sigma’s proprietary OS (Optical Stabiliser) system enables hand held tele-photography by allowing the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible.

Six SLD glass elements compensate for chromatic aberrations and provide high image quality throughout the zoom range. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and ensures sharp and high contrast images even at the maximum apertures.

The lens design adopts an inner focusing and inner zooming system to provide convenient handling and the HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high speed autofocus while allowing full-time manual focus override.

This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 80cm (31.5”) and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:6.3. The rounded 9 blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image. The addition of Sigma’s TELE CONVERTER 1.4x EX DG APO or 2x EX DG APO produces a 70-210 F4 AF telephoto zoom lens or 100-300 F5.6 AF telephoto zoom respectively.
